Coaching Requirements
Coaching young athletes is incredibly rewarding. The team needs volunteers to lead and coach group rides. All levels of riders are welcome to lead and sweep team rides! We just ask that you can join us as consistently as possible.
Coaching Qualifications
In order to ride with the team, you will need to be certified as a Level One Coach with NICA. Click HERE to learn more. The requirements are minimal. Though certainly encouraged and invited, you are NOT required to attend races; we do need you consistently at practices. Level 1 Requirements are listed below. - Sign up on NICA Pit Zone website (Contact Coach Kelly or Dan for an invite)
- Sign the NICA Liability Waiver (Part of the PitZone sign up process)
- Submit to a NICA background check (Approval provided as part of the PitZone sign-up)
- Attend NICA webinar about concussion (20 minutes) and take brief test
- Attend NICA webinar about risk management and take test
Responsibilities:
- Attend practices consistently
- Educate athletes on trail etiquette and proper riding skills
- Keep track of the # of riders in the group
- Maintain safe rider speed
- Ride leaders should always lead descents appropriate to moderate group speed
- Control the group riding on paved roads
- Communicate with the Head Coach during or after the ride about how the group did – who excelled, who needed encouragement
- Help riders with mechanical issues
- Report dangerous or inappropriate behavior
- Facilitate rider inclusion wherever possible, and engage riders in conversation
- Celebrate kids and keep the STOKE!
