Welcome to our gear page!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?
Let's start with a trail-worthy Mountain Bike in safe working order. Several local bike shops will help you choose a bike, provide mechanical support, and are great resources for all the gear you need to safely enjoy mountain biking. If you don't have a bike or have questions about your own bike, please visit one of our local bike shops that support the team. If you can't provide your own Mountain Bike, we have a few loaner bikes and scholarships to help support riders in need. Please reach out, and maybe we can help you out. Scholarship Requests
We've included below a brief education on shops, bikes, and gear to help you understand what you need.
Local Shops that support our team are below, and there are several more in town that would be happy to help you.

What bike and gear do I need?
- A mountain bike in safe, working order.
- A helmet. Check your manufacturing date, Helmets expire.
- Full finger gloves. Full finger gloves are a must.
- Padded bike shorts. One pair comes with your Team Kit and we recommend you have at least 2 pair.
- Breathable shirt and lightweight cycling jacket. One Team Jersey comes with your registration and we recommend a couple :-)
Working out in cotton clothes will cause your kid to overheat. Look into non-cotton or a cotton blend shirt (short and long sleeve) that they’ll be comfortable in. - A simple bike multi-tool. Required, we’ll be teaching the kids how to maintain their own bike. Including how to patch or change the tube in the tire if they get a flat, and other simple bike maintenance tasks.
- A spare tube.
- Hydration pack or water bottle.
What kind of bike do I need?
There are two common divisions of mountain bikes; full-suspension and hard-tail. A full-suspension bike has a rear shock, and the frame is made of pieces that move on pivots. They also have a front fork with a shock that has a range of travel. Full-suspension bikes can have a range of travel and are best for our local trails. Short travel and hardtail bikes are ideal for "RACING" cross-country use.

- Full Suspension Bikes: There are Four names often used for these bikes:
- Downhill - These are the longest travel bikes and are what the big air riders use and not really the ideal bike for our smaller younger riders who are riding Bidwell Park and our local trails. Not recommended for our riders on the team.
- All Mountain - This bike style is what most would say is the right choice for our local riding. The suspension helps soften the blow on our chunky local trails. One down side to these bikes is weight, they are not that light for young riders who may not have the strength and weight to take advantage of the suspension.
- Down Country / Short Travel - These are the bikes that the fastest riders in our local area ride. The suspension to weight ratio is best with this bike model.
- Hardtail - Lightest fastest bikes for race day. The fastest kids on race day at NICA races are on this style bike frame and the lowered weight helps significantly. Should you purchase a Hardtail for your rider it would be wise to own two bikes one for Bidwell Park and one for race day. these bikes are not very forgiving for riders in Bidwell Park
